Mahe – A bit of Pondicherry in Kerala
Have you heard about the smallest district of India? Have you heard of a district of Pondicherry which is located geographically away but ethnically close?
Pin me to read later!!
For those guessing the place, it’s Mahe in Kerala, a place we mapped in high school geography maps! I made half a day trip to Mahe thinking what more might a small district of India hold. I was wrong. Mahe was full of surprises and these were the things we could do in half day.
1) Mahe River walkway
Mahe walkway is aesthetically designed with hillock on one side and Mahe river on other side. Lamp studded pathway does remind us of the French influence.
Adding to the flare is the elegantly designed park benches. At one end of the walkway, there is a brass illustrations of a famous novel “Mayyazhi puzhayude theeragalil”
2) Stumble upon Colourful colonial houses
Once a French colony, you can find traces of it still in Mahe. From government public library to museum to old houses, you could feel the colonial vibes in it.
Though you can’t find as much French influence as in Pondicherry, you can still find some remnants in Mahe.
3) Azhimukham
The confluence of colossal Arabian sea and the picturesque Mayyazhi river creates a scenic spot named Azhimukham. With docked catamarans and a shore area full of trees, Azhimukham looks even more surreal.
4) Musuem Government house
Hello history bluffs! Here’s something Mahe got for you, a Museum government house. Get yourself ready to immerse yourself in the pages of history. This museum also houses some rare art collections.
5) Mahe hillock
Mahe hillock is designed with modern amenities in such a way that the natural beauty of the hillock is not compromised.
The hillock which houses the light house, provides a bird’s eye view of the Arabian sea and also is a wonderful spot to watch a serene sunset. Ultimately the hillock makes it to a stunning picnic spot with well laid pavement, sit-outs and restrooms.
6) Stone stacked pathway
With stones stacked on both sides to prevent the inflow of water, walk down the long pathway to experience the beauty of it. When we went there, there wasn’t a soul out there which made the place even more charming.
Have you ever been to Mahe? If not, it’s time to pack your bags and explore the smallest district of India?
Plan your trip in non summer months to enjoy Mahe fully!
Happy travelling!!
